Police in Eldoret have arrested four men suspected to be behind a spate of SIM card swapping crimes committed in the region. The Four men were arrested in their base of operations at Panvilla, Pioneer estate. In their possession were at least 20,000 sim cards, 300 mobile phones and two laptops suspected to be important cogs in the execution of the illegal business.
Elsewhere in Ruiru Kiambu County, DCI detectives today afternoon arrested four suspects: two men and two ladies suspected of the same offense. In their possession were 30,000 sim cards, 240 iphones, 150 MI phones, 2 laptops, 2 inverters, and other electronic appliances.
The past few months have seen a sharp rise in the number of cases reported by members of the public regarding loss of money held in their Safaricom MPESA accounts through unauthorized SIM card swaps. This has brought panic among clients of the service provider worried about the safety of their money and private data. Safaricom have since come down hard on employees suspected of enabling the fraudsters with many arrests carried out in the past few weeks.
