The original and hidden Raila intention after the handshake was to drive a wedge between DP Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta and disintegrate the giant Jubilee Party before 2022 because as it stands now, Jubilee is an unstoppable juggernaut and which would sweep the 2022 race with effortless ease.
The referendum debate therefore presented the perfect opportunity to isolate the DP because there was a wrong initial assumption that the President and his Deputy were reading from a different script on the matter.
But when President Uhuru confirmed concurrence with his Deputy’s position that there shall be no referendum, it sent panic to the Raila/ODM wing in the handshake. For the first time after the handshake, Raila while speaking in the UK went for the jugular and attacked Jubilee by revisiting the “legitimacy question”, when he said that 2017 was a rigged election.
And back home, ODM has launched a scathing attack at DP Ruto in what is a clear pointer of where ODM’s greatest discomfort lies.
From where I sit, I think the handshake is in ICU and it’s only a matter of time before it is altogether abandoned.
